Spring Break 2010, continued

Like I said in the the last blog, it's Saturday evening. We are on the hunt for a restaurant downtown. You can't go to Savannah and not go downtown. We arrive downtown, and needed to find a parking space. Note to self: never drive to downtown Savannah, take a taxi. The streets were full of cars. They had parallel parking nearly everywhere, and just a few parking lots. All were full. The 2 main streets were full of people. It was a mad house. We drove all around downtown 3 times. We finally found a parking spot like 6 blocks away. I was excited because we were about 2 blocks from the Lady and Sons restaurant. This is Paula Deans restaurant. They were booked for the rest of the day! I read online that you cannot call to make reservations, you have to show up in person the day you plan to visit. Now I know why they said that. Picture to left: Lady and Sons. It wasn't what I expected. Small building.

Long story short, we finally found a restaurant that was decently priced, and had a variety of food. Downfall, there was a 45 minute wait. It's 8pm by this point, so we said that is fine, even though I'm starving. We waited for about 20 minutes, then I asked for a menu. The menu shows meals $30 and up, and it's all basically seafood! I hate fish. I know, I'm on the atlantic ocean, and I expect meat, big mistake. Found out, we were looking at the lunch menu when we first noticed the prices and normal food. So...we decided to share a pizza, which was $12, and I ordered a ceasar salad, which was $7. The pizza was a personal pizza, 4 slices! You would have thought the waitress could have told us this when I said "we will be sharing this pizza." She was a ball of sunshine, so I shouldn't expect it. We probably left there around 10pm. We headed back to the car and stopped at a few small shops. To make another long story short, we saw about 3 wedding parties, and lots of other people who had been tipping the bottle. The streets were loud! So, we couldn't have gotten to the car fast enough. Moral of the story, I would have settled for the McDonalds near our hotel.
Picture to left: this is how the streets looked. Some streets were even just large stones. Picture to right: Sorry about the bad photography, we were in a moving car. There was a trolly that ran up and down the streets. Glad it wasn't coming right this second.

We went back to our hotel for the night. I'm not sure if I explained earlier what I really thought about the hotel. It was old, and the towels were thin as a sheet with a couple terrycloth ridges. The halls were dirty. And places like make me feel creepy. We survived though. This puts us into Sunday. I will write more tomorrow.

Spring Break 2010, continued

After our exciting adventure to Hilton Head, we headed toward Savannah. We had hotel reservations with a check-in time at 3. So, at this point we were way ahead of schedule. And we could not check in early. I guess some college spring-breakers trashed the hotel. Now I am really looking forward to stay at this place. I guess they threw pizzas on the walls, whole pizzas, and some other small damage.
Picture to left: I think this was the tallest bridge I have ever traveled on.

Anyways, we went just east of Savannah to Tybee Island. We actually had a lot of fun there. We went to one of the tallest lighthouses (next day I was sooooo sore from all those stairs), and its' museum. This also included a tour through the head keepers house (built in 1881), the original summer kitchen (built in 1812), and a few other buildings used for the lighthouse. We also went into Fort Screven's Battery Garland. This place served as part of America's Coastal Defense System until 1945. Now it is Tybee's museum. Tybee also has a long pier. We watched people fish, a guy "trying" to surf (that was fun), parasailing, etc.

Picture to right: man "trying" to surf. I'm no surfer, but those waves don't look big enough to surf on, and that water was freezing!

On our way to Savannah from Tybee, we stopped for lunch. We ate at a BBQ and seafood restaurant. You know how much I love BBQ. Well, not here. Danny liked is grilled tilapia though. I usually get unsweetened iced tea, with splenda, but I am in the south...so I ordered sweet tea. And it was the best drink I have ever had! Now I am hooked. That will have to change once we get back home though. At this point, we were able to check in to our hotel. When we got there they will trying to find a room for us. I guess someone overbooked the rooms. Pictures online can be deceiving, I have always expected the hotel to look a little less attractive. Hotel was under new owners, and so the website stated things that the hotel did not have anymore, i.e. managers reception. It was kinda messy too. I guess for our discounted price of $64, it was not bad. But I would never pay their normal price of $130 a night. Once we got situated in our room, we took a 2 hour nap. Remember, Danny had basically been up for 25 hours at this point. I was up for like 30-ish hours, with a few power naps. We are nuts! Hey, atleast I'm admitting it right.

So it's about 6:00 Saturday evening in Savannah, Georgia. And I'm hungry. And I want to see Downtown Savannah. If I knew what was ahead of us, I would have put my "wants" to the side.

Spring Break 2010

Well, all of you know know that we are not party animals, so our spring break trip is planned for St. Augustine, Florida. Friday March 26, Danny and I tried to sleep in. I worked the afternoon that day, and Danny took a nap...nearly the entire time I was at work. Then, at 5:30pm, we began our roadtrip. We drove through the ENTIRE night. Note: We will never do that again. I was getting tired at like 9:30pm! We had until 9am of driving. So, around midnight we stopped at McDonalds for ice cream. My wonderful husband had about 6 crystal light energy drinks. Have you ever had those??? I can barely drink 1! So he had to pee after each bottle of water he drank. So you guessed it, we stopped like 7 times. Geesh. I would fall asleep for about 30 minutes, and then wake up. Neither one of us ever got much sleep. We finally arrived at our first destination around 8:30am Saturday. Hilton Head. I have always wanted to see Hilton Head, so we thought we would swing by there on our way South. Well, I would still like to see it, haha. We were trying to get to the main strip on Hilton Head, and ended up making 1 huge loop, and totally missed the tourist area. So we stopped for Breakfast. I loved this restaurant because it was decorated like an old diner. I took lots of pictures. I will have to post them later. After breakfast, we decided to just leave and go on to our next destination.

The picture to the right is the only picture I have of the diner. This was taken with my phone, so I guess I left my camera in the car.
